The Institute for Ethics is committed to pursuing both conceptual and empirical scholarly endeavors such as:

ScholarshipExpansion of its existing inquiry related to special populations. Our current topics of study include

  • ethical aspects of clinical care and research involving special populations
  • ethical dimensions of rural health care
  • ethical issues surrounding genetic information
  • unique aspects of health care for physicians-in-training
  • assisted death practices and attitudes in the United States
  • family, cultural, and community perspectives in clinical care and research
  • developmentally-attuned professionalism training initiatives in medical education, among others

As Dr. Joan Gibson, retired Senior Bioethicist for the Institute for Ethics, commented, "The current climate of health care rising costs, increasing lack of coverage, a focus on medical mistakes, and 'physician flight' to name a few illustrates the great need for a rigorous interdisciplinary approach to issues that affect us all, personally and professionally."
